Would you rather work with your hands than sit in a classroom? Are you interested in Precision Machinery, Welding, Cosmetology, Auto Repair, Dental Hygiene, and more? If so, then maybe pursuing a Vocational / Technical education is the best fit for you!
What is a Vocational / Technical education?
This type of education provides students with instruction and training for occupations that do not require a bachelor’s degree. It is a blend of technical, conceptual, and hands-on training a person receives to fill a specific job or trade. These programs take no longer than 2 years to complete and after completion, you become certified in a certain trade either by completing the necessary courses or by taking an exam.
Where can I go to learn a trade?
The community college system has several programs including precision machining, welding, industrial maintenance, cosmetology, etc. and they usually don’t take longer than one year to complete. This is the cheapest option.
There are also apprenticeship programs like the Apprentice School in Newport News. They offer certifications in trades like welding, heating/air, and other trades for those interested in shipbuilding. With apprentice programs students are taking classes, but also working and getting paid for their work.
However, some students choose to go to for-profit trade schools. Be cautious if you choose this option. They can be expensive and many do not have the proper accreditation so do your research and see your College Adviser before choosing this option. For a list of trade schools in Virginia click here.
